BRINGING CHILDREN AND MUSICIANS TOGETHER

Serena S.Y. Hsu is a wire photojournalist with ZUMA Press. She was contacted July 2025 to design Intersection Music and Arts' new website. Serena is inspired by the dedication and vision of IMA's music education for youth and children and its commitment to expand these opportunities for underserved communities and families.
Serena draws upon her many-storied career and aesthetics, creating additional graphic design material for Intersection Music and Arts while juggling a full workload with ZUMA Press. Prior to ZUMA and IMA, Serena had 25 years of 3D animation, 15 years of graphic design, 10 years of web coding and javascript, and 5 years of traditional illustration. Right after college graduation, she enjoyed freelance writing and illustrating children's magazine stories for Kansas City Zoo's Zoomin and Wee Wisdom and producing children's illustrations for Nazarene Publishing House's Bible Vacation School. Her favorite companies that she worked full-time at were Determined Productions (replicating Charles Schulz's linework for Snoopy and Peanuts product designs back in the 1990s) and as a 3D animator for Populous, a world-renowned architectural firm which designs all of the U.S major league sports stadiums and several Olympic stadiums.
Now a “veteran” ZUMA wire photojournalist, Serena has jointly written and photographed several articles with KCPT (Kansas City's Public Television), KC Studio (a fine arts magazine), and INKansasCity. Internationally, her photographs are published in the UK (including The Guardian), in Japan's major syndicates, and in Germany (including DW - Deutche Welle – Germany’s international public broadcaster). Serena has photographed several International Figure Skating Championships; dress rehearsals at Lincoln Center, the Joyce Theater, the BAM Theater, and the New York City Center for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Mark Morris Dance Group, Ballet Hispanico, and Martha Graham Dance Company; locally for the Kansas City Ballet, the Kansas City Symphony, and Quixotic; and pursued several Native American stories, which were likewise published by Kansas City Public Television. Since February 2022, she has been donating her press earnings to Ukraine. She considers photojournalism as her much-beloved and final career. Covering humanitarian issues and meeting people from all walks of life, their struggles and their personal journeys are integral to Serena’s inspiration and life goals.
